New Report Shows Public Charter Schools Headed in the Right Direction

Today, the city released the School Equity Reports (link is external) for the fourth year in a row.  The reports provide unprecedented levels of information on how well each public and public charter school in the District responds to the diverse needs of the students they educate. By providing apples-to-apples comparisons of schools and presenting the results in a format that is easy to understand, the reports signal potential problems, help schools focus on areas that need to improve, and guide parents as they make decisions about their child’s education.

DC Public Charter School Board Releases School Quality Ratings!

WASHINGTON, DC – A new citywide report shows public charter school quality continuing to rise. The report, released by the DC Public Charter School Board (DC PCSB), is a comprehensive look at education for public charter schools throughout the District of Columbia serving grades prekindergarten (PK) to 12 and adult programs. The results show students living in every Ward of the city are benefitting from attending top-performing “Tier 1” public charter schools.

Today’s release covers schools serving grades PK through eighth grade.  DC PCSB will release results for high school and adult public charter schools in early November.

Scott Pearson: We’ve Considered Lots of Other Innovative Ideas. Why Not Unionized Charters, Too? (And Rebuttal)

By Scott Pearson | Originially Published by Education Post (link is external)

Most charter leaders look at the prospect of a unionized workforce with horror. Work rules, seniority-based placement, and onerous due process all are at odds with the charter model of flexibility, nimbleness, and a single-minded focus on kids’ learning.

But I’ve seen it work differently. Green Dot Public Schools in Los Angeles embraced unions from the outset, and negotiated a thin union contract appropriate for a charter school’s way of operating.

Want to ‘train your brain’? Forget apps, learn a musical instrument

Black Lives Matter…to this youth

JUST LAST month, Akilah Johnson was “surprised and overwhelmed” when she learned that she was a national finalist in the “Doodle 4 Google” contest for elementary through high school students.

Imagine how she feels now.

Akilah, a sophomore at Eastern Senior High School in Northeast Washington, has just been named Google’s big winner in the national contest, topping the 53 state and territory champions, whose work had been culled from about 100,000 student entries.

Akilah is the contest’s first winner from Washington, as D.C. was not eligible to enter the states-only competition in past years.
